Discrimination in the work place is something that one would think no longer exists as laws are in place to protect current and potential employees. However, it is still very much a real issue at places of employment in Michigan and across the country. For example, an ex principal in another state filed an age discrimination suit against his former employer and was recently awarded a settlement as a result.
The plaintiff in this case filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, claiming that he was fired after the school learned he had retired from a previous job. He also claims that the school showed a strong preference for female staff. Because of his experience, he believes he was fired because of his age and gender.
According to a recent report, the Renaissance School agreed to pay nearly $70,000 in order to settle this case. The school will also be required to provide discrimination and retaliation training to its staff members, stressing a zero tolerance policy for such behavior. The school opted to settle rather than go through the time and expense of a jury trial.
More people of retirement age are re-entering or choosing to stay in the workforce. This may be for financial reasons or simply for something to fill time. Regardless of why a person may want to work, age and/or gender should not be a reason to fire or refuse to hire an individual who is experienced and able to perform the necessary job requirements. Those in Michigan who believe they have been the victims of age discrimination can take legal action in an effort to seek compensation for any losses resulting from such treatment.
