How to heal and rebuild after an emotional divorce

On Behalf of | Feb 25, 2022 | Divorce |

A marital breakup can feel like the end of the world to those in Michigan who go through it. However, a divorce doesn’t mean the person’s life has to stop or that he or she will never find love again. Although it may not feel like it, it is possible to move on and emotionally heal after a divorce. Here are a few ways to do just that.

Ask for help

No person has to go through divorce alone. It is always helpful to join a divorce support group or speak with a therapist about what happened in the marriage. If therapy is uncomfortable, call an understanding friend and talk about thoughts and feelings. Discussing and explaining emotions can facilitate healing.

Focus on the positive

Since the marriage didn’t work, it is easy to look at what went wrong and see the divorce as a failure. However, try to zoom out and look at the past relationship objectively as a whole. Most of the time, it will become evident that the marriage was not going to work regardless.

Celebrate small victories

Look for one little thing each day that proves progress is being made. These can be things like reading a chapter of a book or cooking a delicious meal. These small victories add up and can be greatly nourishing for one’s soul.

Keep in mind that time is a great healer. It may be painful now, but keep practicing self-care and life will get better. Any person in Michigan who has questions about divorce or needs legal help could benefit by contacting a seasoned lawyer. A knowledgeable family law attorney can answer difficult questions and help individuals get through this confusing and emotional situation.
