Creating a suitable parenting plan after a divorce

A marital breakup is often a tumultuous time. For most Michigan parents who go through a divorce, their main concern and objective is the safety and well-being of their children. Even though the parents are going their separate ways, they still want to ensure that their kids have the best life possible, and this is where the appropriate parenting plan can help. Here are a few things to consider when creating a parenting plan

The best interests of the children

The best interests of the children should be the primary focus of any parenting plan. Parents need to make sure the parenting plan covers the most critical aspects of the children’s lives, both physically and emotionally. The work schedules of the parents and the distance between parental homes are examples of some physical aspects that may need focus. A plan should also address helping the kids stay emotionally grounded and give them the opportunity to maintain meaningful relationships with both parents.

Finances

Both parents should share financial responsibilities regardless of custody and parenting arrangements. Courts typically order the noncustodial parent to pay child support to contribute toward the financial support of the children. A parenting plan could also include some parameters as to how child support money is spent.

Have a communication plan

Communication between separated parents is crucial and sometimes overlooked. As children begin moving between both homes, efficient and frequent communication between parents is a must. For this reason, a good parenting plan should include a structured plan for communicating. Parents should come to an agreement on how they will stay in touch and share updates about the children.

Although creating a good parenting plan after a difficult divorce is not easy, it is something that can serve a family’s needs for many years. Parents in Michigan who have questions about child custody or parenting arrangements may want to consider speaking with a legal representative. A trusted and experienced family law attorney can provide legal insight to best serve the needs of the client.
