How to help children cope with a parental divorce

On Behalf of | Oct 28, 2023 | Divorce |

For some marriages in Michigan, divorce eventually becomes the best path forward. Understandably, a parental divorce will have certain effects on the children. The kids may feel like their entire world has been turned upside down. Some children will blame themselves, and some children may develop resentment toward their parents. Although there are no easy ways to get through a divorce, there are a few ways parents can help their children cope with one.

Listen to them

Children experience divorce much differently than adults. They may be frustrated or sad about things that their parents never expected. Sometimes, kids hold back their true feelings because they worry that they will hurt their parents. Encourage the children to share and express their feelings and listen to them when they do.

Acknowledge them

Parents want to fix problems for their children. However, there may not be an easy way to fix the sadness and grief the children feel. During this time, it is important to acknowledge their feelings instead of dismissing them. Parents can strengthen bonds and facilitate trust simply by showing they understand.

Reassure them

When parents separate, children may think it’s their fault and their parents no longer love them. Reassure the kids often that the divorce was not their fault and was the decision of their parents. When parents keep the well-being of their children as the top priority, everyone should be able to move forward in a positive direction. For those in Michigan who have questions about divorce or any aspect of family law, an experienced legal professional can provide invaluable guidance every step of the way.
